The Richard L. Roudebush VA Medical Center in Indianapolis, Indiana is recruiting for a Staff Physician (Assistant Chief, Medicine Service). The incumbent of this position reports directly to the Chief of Medicine and is responsible for assisting with the clinical and administrative functions of the Medicine Service. The incumbent is responsible for participation in and oversight of appropriate performance improvement and system redesign activities, as well as for advancing the principles of appropriate management/standards of care applicable to our veteran patients in the inpatient and outpatient settings. The incumbent will assist the Medicine Service Chief in leading the patient care, teaching, and research missions within the Medicine Service, and attend relevant meetings as necessary. The incumbent will aid in completing performance evaluations as appropriate and, with supervision, will assist in managing non-VA care referral issues. The Assistant Chief of Medicine will be responsible for helping the Service Chief oversee the appropriate staffing and functioning of both the hospitalist and housestaff teaching teams on a monthly basis, working directly with the Chief Hospitalist. The incumbent will also assist the Service Chief in determining outpatient subspecialty clinic staffing needs and appropriate physician staffing levels and workload in all subspecialty medicine clinics. Lastly, the Assistant Chief of Medicine will serve as a liaison between the Medicine Service and the VA Research Service and IU Research Departments respectively, as well as the IU School of Medicine Department of Medicine. Duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
The incumbent will also serve as a staff Physician and provide acute evaluation and care for patients on the inpatient and outpatient side.
The incumbent will participate in all required UM/QM activities relating to the inpatient and outpatient activities of the Medicine Service and address identified deficiencies in meeting relevant facility performance measures/standards of care (based upon IPEC, EPRP, OIG, and Joint Commission Requirements).
Under the auspices of the Chief of Medicine (COM), additional duties and responsibilities of the Assistant Chief include, but are not limited to:
1. Attend all relevant VA institutional committee meetings as assigned by the COM. 2. Supervise and work directly with the Hospitalist Chief on a daily basis to optimize med-surg bed patient flow and bed utilization, as well as troubleshoot identified bed shortages, working with bed czar/bed control to expedite discharges/admissions. 3. Works with Hospitalist Chief and Subspecialty Chief to regularly assess Medicine Service Performance Metrics and address identified deficiencies via gap analysis and creation of corrective action plans. 4. Monitors all Medicine Service Physician TMS/Medical Record/ACLS-BLS deficiencies and works with physicians as a group and/or individually to resolve deficiencies. 5. Mentors Medicine Service physicians in professionalism and VA policies procedures. 6. Attends all relevant Medicine Service Section Chief Meetings, Quarterly Section Meetings, and Annual Meetings. 7. Supervises all Medicine Service Physician Credentialing and works with the Credentialing Dept. to keep all required OPPE/FPPE up-to-date. 8. Develops and implements action plans to address individual physician deficiencies as identified from physician activity report (PAR) metrics. 9. Participates in and helps develop/implement Systems Redesign Projects applicable to the Medicine Service, etc.
Work Schedule: Monday through Friday; 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. with rotating weekends and holidays
