The Minneapolis VA Health Care system, a class 1A high complexity medical center within VISN 23, is seeking an enthusiastic academic geriatric researcher to become the Director of its nationally and internationally renowned Geriatric Research, Education and Clinical Center (GRECC). As a VA researcher, know that it the largest, most technologically advanced integrated health care system in the nation. The Veterans Health Administration (VHA) initiated a strategy to focus attention on the aging veteran population, to increase the basic knowledge of aging, to transmit that knowledge to health care providers, and to improve the quality of care to the aged. A cornerstone of this strategy has been the development of Geriatric Research, Education and Clinical Centers (GRECCs). The GRECCs are "centers of geriatric excellence: designed for the advancement and integration of research, education and clinical achievements in geriatrics and gerontology into the VA health care system. All 19 of VHA's GRECCs strive to improve the quality of life for the aging veteran and are at the forefront of leading edge research and education. Research results have influenced therapies for diseases affecting older veterans and have also been exported beyond the veteran community.
The mission of the Minneapolis GRECC is to improve the health of the older veteran through integrated research, education and the development to find innovative clinical models. The GRECC's current research interests include clinical trials in Alzheimer's disease, animal models of Alzheimer's and Parkinson's disease, brain imaging in dementia, neuropeptide control of eating, new models of health care delivery, driving and dementia, and novel strategies for teaching the assessment and management of dementia. An emerging area of research is the longitudinal cognitive assessment of Veterans with traumatic brain injuries that will lead to the testing of interventions to improve functional outcomes. The Director will build the team, which in time, may involve a team of 15-20 personnel.
The Minneapolis VA Health Care System is seeking an academic geriatrics leader to become the Director of its Geriatric Research, Education and Clinical Center (GRECC). The mission of the Minneapolis GRECC is to improve the care of older Veterans through integrated research, education and innovative clinical care.
The GRECC Director will be responsible for the overall operations and management of the GRECC, providing strategic leadership to foster continued growth, and strong working relationships with the VA locally, regionally (VISN 23) and nationally, and with the University of Minnesota.
Physician candidates are encouraged to apply. Clinical PhD (e.g. nursing, clinical psychology) candidates are also welcome to apply to an identical, but separate announcement for the Clinical PhD applicants, which are announced by specialty. The best candidate will be an established and successful academic geriatrics researcher who will qualify for an academic appointment at the University of Minnesota at the Associate or Full Professor Level and have their leadership experience and a track record of mentoring junior faculty. The ideal candidate will be a flexible "big picture" thinker who possesses excellent interpersonal skills and is able to lead and work with groups.
Competitive salary and benefits, recruitment incentives and relocation expenses are authorized for this position, as appropriate. The successful candidate also may be eligible to apply for the Education Debt Reduction Program which may allow the applicant to be reimbursed for up to $120,000 over 5 years of service for medical school debt.
