The VA Caribbean Healthcare System is recruiting for a full-time Staff Psychiatrist to work at the San Juan Behavioral Health Clinic. The position encompasses and has the potential to work in multiple different settings, including inpatient Acute Behavioral Health Inpatient Care Unit (ABHICU), Psychiatry Intervention Center (PIC), Electro Convulsive Therapy (ECT), Consultation and Liaison Service (C&L), and other Outpatient Behavioral Health Clinics. The Physician (Psychiatry) duties consist of but are not limited to the following: Shares clinical responsibility for the continuing management of assigned patients with the interdisciplinary team consisting of other psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers, and nurses. Exercises independent judgment in carrying out duties and responsibilities. The position encompasses and has the potential to work in outpatient and inpatient areas. He or she will be responsible for the "cross coverage" of other areas of supervision such as Acute Behavioral Health Inpatient Care Unit (ABHICU), or Outpatient Care Line as assigned by the San Juan Acute Care Behavioral Health Program Manager or Chief Psychiatry Service. As a member of the inter-disciplinary team, he/she focuses on the assessment/evaluation and medication management of veterans who suffer from a variety of mental health conditions, including, but not limited to Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), depression, psychosis, anxiety and other related conditions. Provides clinical assessment/evaluation of veterans with difficult and complex mental health issues, selecting then from a variety of resources and clinical approaches including non-direct and cognitive behavior therapy, behavior modification, insight oriented methods, family therapy, relaxation training, medication management, etc. Assures that every mental health patient has an assigned Mental Health Treatment Coordinator, either by becoming it or by assuring assignment within the interdisciplinary team. As time permits, may participate in research projects. Depending on fluctuating staffing patterns and workloads, may be assigned to other programs within the Psychiatry Service. Shall follow all duties designed by the Service Chief that could be changed within a reasonable time and within a psychiatric clinical setting being provided appropriate instructions and coordination. Coordinates preventive health care needs according to guidelines established by the Department of Veterans Affairs and sound Psychiatry practice. Maintains an active knowledge of the patient care processes of the Department of Veterans Affairs, the medical center and its clinics. Must be available for all psychiatric interventions during on call hours and assures their supervised staff is available as well for their assigned-on call coverage. Shall have knowledge of and abide by Medical Center Bylaws, VHA Rules and Regulations and have a familiarization with existing VA specific clinical guidelines as well as Psychiatry Service rules, regulations and policies. Shall fulfill the requirements for employment and credentials as determined by the VA Caribbean Healthcare System. This shall include mandatory and continuing educational requirements and maintaining current registration in the State of licensure in medicine from a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States or in the District of Columbia. Must demonstrate continuing effort to keep abreast of new medical developments and medical literature. The responsibility to complete timely medical license renewal, credentials and board certification remains with the physician. Depending on the clinical setting the supervision of medical students, physician assistants (PA), Clinical Pharmacy Specialist, Psychiatry Residents and ARNPs could be part of the psychiatrist's responsibility.
